Graceland

I have been to Graceland 20 or so times. At one time I thought it was a magical place; now I know it’s just cheesy. I am not proud of going, it was a mistake. What is important is that I can admit it and move on. The same is true for leaders, making mistakes is as much a part of leadership as standing in front of a crowd and casting vision. We just don’t put “Make Mistakes” on our job descriptions. If you’re a leader you are going to make mistakes. Embrace it and be willing to admit them because making mistakes means you’re taking risks and risks are the key to great leadership. How many great leaders do you know who never took a risk? Think about it for a minute. If mistakes are part of risk taking and great leaders take risks, then why are we so afraid of admitting we messed up? Just go ahead and let your followers know you messed up and what you learned from the experience. They are going to be 100 times more willing to follow you if you do.
